This is an old frilly “cabbage” lettuce popular in England since the early 1700s.  It is mentioned in many American seed lists throughout the 1800s as an early spring variety.  It is now considered one of the great lettuce classics of the heirloom garden and will thrive in cold frames or polytunnels.
