Sauer’s Herbal Cures: America’s First Book of Botanic Healing

Translated from German and Edited by William Woys Weaver. Masthof Press, $45.00

This new, revised second edition has been published jointly by the Roughwood Center for Heritage Seedways and the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University. Consisting of 400 pages, including glossary and index, the text features Christopher Sauer’s original herbal issued in installments between 1762 and 1778. Dr. Weaver has made several important revisions in the botanical nomenclature, plus a new foreword.  Period illustrations are taken from rare hand-colored woodcuts in an eighteenth-century herbal belonging to Philadelphia apothecary Tobias Hirte. Christopher Sauer (1721-1784), the compiler of the original herbal, was himself a successful apothecary and book printer.  Since its publication in 2001, Sauer’s herbal has become a prized collector’s item. Here is your chance to own a personalized autographed copy at a fraction of the cost of the original edition!
