Pafos Medieval Lettuce (Maroulli Pafitiki)

Lactuca sativa

Dr. Weaver discovered this rare medieval lettuce in the open market at Pafos, Cyprus in 2002.  It was a local specialty grown by one displaced farmer whose family brought the seed from the north following the 1974 Turkish invasion.  Long, crisp leaves bronzed on the outer edges, Pafos turns vibrant green toward the center.  Dating to the Byzantine era, Pafos produces heads 10 inches in diameter.  Cos/Romaine type but open-headed.  Minimum 30 seeds.
