Kaiser Friedrich Butter Bean   Phaseolus vulgaris
This extremely rare snap bean was introduced in 1888 as the Kaiser Friedrich pole bean with 12-to-14-foot vines, harvested as a super-productive snap bean when 5 ½ to 6 inches long. Named in honor of German Emperor Friedrich III of Prussia (1831-1888) who ruled only 99 days. After Hitler came to power in 1933, the Swiss renamed the bean Berner Butter Bean.  25 seeds $4.50.
