During a seed exchange with villagers in the far south of India, we acquired this unique landrace, which came to us without a local name. As an ornamental with plume-like leaves it is a garden spectacular. It can also be used as a dyestuff since it produces a dark red-purple coloring. But it is also excellent in food, although its aggressive color is likely to dye the dish a splashy rose. When used in chutneys with turmeric, the effect is orange. Try it on rice!
