Early Hackensack Melon Cucumis melo, var. reticulatus
This rare melon evolved about 1870 in northern New Jersey as a selection of Green Citron. It was introduced commercially in 1882. Over the years, a strain of Early Hackensack emerged with orange flesh around the seed mass. Our strain, from the Seed Savers Exchange collection, exhibits some of the green fleshed traits but has become more orange than green. The melons are also smaller, averaging about 2 ½ to 3 pounds, yet extraordinarily fragrant when vine ripe. Minimum 20 seeds. $5.00 Germination 96%. Packed for 2024. Lot RW2023-CUC073
